Bas Geerts (1971, NL) is a Dutch visual artist, music programmer, and writer whose work explores the confrontation between power and powerlessness. Since 2023, he has been developing an ongoing series of double portraits in which silhouettes of victims and those in power are superimposed, questioning the disproportionate relationships between them and giving voice to the oppressed. Geerts paintings are characterized by an openness of form, expressed through vibrant colors made from pure pigments and the use of reflective metal leaf that changes with the viewer’s position. The compositions are generated through a computer program the artist wrote himself, incorporating random parameters that continuously produce new visual outcomes. In this process, Geerts blurs the line between intention and chance, challenging the notion of artistic control and emphasizing shared responsibility between artist and viewer.
