Jan Maarten Voskuil: Cubist Circles
"What else can a painting be besides linen stretched over a rectangle?"
MPV Gallery is pleased to present the first solo exhibition by Dutch artist Jan Maarten Voskuil (b. 1964, Arnhem) at the gallery.
Voskuil builds three-dimensional paintings: linen stretched over sculpted, self-designed stretcher frames that curve and fold off the wall, blurring the line between painting, sculpture and architecture. New works continue his ongoing series of Cubist Circles, where flat colour is pushed into deep, sculptural relief and the circle becomes a self-referential form marking the outer limits of the image itself.
Voskuil's work has been shown internationally, including at Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, Peter Blake Gallery (USA), Pentimenti Gallery (Philadelphia), Sebastian Fath Contemporary (Mannheim), and recently in Taiwan. In 2022 his work featured in the Piet Mondriaan 150th-anniversary exhibition at Museum Het Mondriaanhuis, Amersfoort.
