In his paintings, self-taught Italian artist Gianfranco Asveri (1948, IT) turns to his own life for inspiration, translating personal experiences, memories and cherished companions - above all his beloved dogs - into instinctive, richly material works. Built up from thick layers of oil paint mixed with marble dust, his colourful, poetic paintings echo the ideals of the CoBrA group and Art Informel. "Matter is poetry," Asveri has said, "you don't need to intervene, you can simply feel it." Named one of Italy's ten most important market artists by Il Sole 24 Ore, he lives and works in the hills of Gasperini, near Castell'Arquato.
