JOEHOE: Solo Exhibition, Erik Buijs

MPV Gallery is proud to present the first solo exhibition by sculptor Erik Buijs at MPV Gallery in Oisterwijk, starting Saturday July 5.

Erik Buijs is known for his visual language that evokes both wonder and discomfort. In his solo exhibition JOEHOE, Erik Buijs takes you into his wonderful world of the absurd, the playful, and the existential. With his characteristic style - expressive and often with a nod - Buijs explores themes such as identity and duality, strength and vulnerability.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Erik Buijs (1970, NL) is a Dutch sculptor known for his idiosyncratic and expressive sculptures that balance on the intersection of humor and existential seriousness. His work is recognizable: modeled, often cartoonish figures with recognizable body shapes and provocative facial expressions. They confront the viewer with the absurd nature of being human.

Erik Buijs studied at the Sint Joost Academy in Breda, followed by the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Arnhem. He developed into an artist with a distinctive visual language. His sculptures are usually made from materials such as bronze, resin, or polyester, and excel in their combination of expressive forms and subtle psychological charge.

Central to his work are themes such as alienation, identity, the relationship between man and society, and the often uncomfortable balance between reason and instinct. Although his sculptures appear light-hearted or even comical at first glance, beneath the surface lies a deeper layer of reflection, tragedy, and vulnerability.

Erik Buijs has exhibited his work both nationally and internationally, in galleries and public spaces. His sculptures are part of various private and institutional collections.
