“Painting for me is imagining that which does not exist, something that appears out of the invisible”
Gam Klutier (1947, NL) was born in the Netherlands but since 1981 he has been working and living in Lima, Peru, where his work is widely known. Over the years, Klutier has developed a visual language all his own, strongly influenced by the habitat and nature of Peru. An imaginary micro-macro-like world of plant figures, animal figures, humanoids and hybrid creatures roams weightlessly across his often very large canvases. Some figures are large and solid; others are small and messy.
Klutier works in a limited color palette, using only black and white, yellow, blue, silver and gold. A pattern of lines and shapes swirls across the canvas in a dynamic, layered image. The multifaceted work seems to flow intuitively and effortlessly from his hands. Klutier believes that inner awareness is the key to life, and he creates his work from that perspective as well. “The act of painting is irrational to me, it is like entering an intuitive field where I can respond directly to an inner calling that takes over and initiates the painting process. His recent sculptures, which clearly stem from his two-dimensional creations, also seem feathery, like standing figures cut from a piece of paper.
Gam Klutier's work is included in many private collections, public spaces and museums at home and abroad.
