Étienne Viard FR, b. 1954

Étienne Viard (1954, FR) is a French self-taught sculptor who divides his time between Paris and Provence. He began sculpting in 1980 using materials like clay, wood, and stone, before fully committing to steel in the 1990s. Working within the minimalist tradition, he reduces his artistic vocabulary to a single element — the line — bending and cutting Corten steel cold with just three techniques: folding, cutting, and assembly. His sculptures balance on the edge of gravity, evoking organic forms from nature while defying the physical properties of their rigid material. Internationally exhibited across Europe, North America, and Asia, Viard is recognized as one of the leading sculptors working with Corten steel today.
