Sylvestre Gauvrit was born in 1977 in the forests around Moulins, France. As a child, he spent most of his time climbing ancient oak trees and observing nature. Later in life, he traveled the world surfing waves. Being at one with nature is central to his life and therefore also to his work.
Sylvestre wanted to sculpt from an early age. He could always be found with tools in his hands, giving tangible form to his wild imagination. He trained at the Accademia Belle Arti in Carrara and then worked in various institutional art studios in Pietrasanta, where he developed his skills as a sculptor. He has mastered not only the purely manual techniques of chisel and hammer, but also state-of-the-art 3D computer techniques for shaping the material. He enters his sketches digitally, and the material can then be modeled down to the smallest detail using advanced tools.
In his designs, Sylvestre explicitly chooses flowing, organic forms. He experiences these forms in nature, in human movements, and in the shapes and patterns evoked by the natural elements of air, water, and fire. The sculptor usually uses marble or stainless steel. In his eyes, these are the perfect materials to give spatial form to these movements. The new technical possibilities he applies enable him to give the material a natural, flowing form instead of leaving traces of the process of chopping, chiseling, and sanding.
Sylvestre's work exudes an almost self-evident ease as the lines and surfaces flow and swirl. A quality that can be found in both his small works and his monumental sculptures. Sylvestre's unique sculptures adorn both public and private collections in major cultural centers around the world, including Paris, London, Rome, Amsterdam, Hong Kong, and Dubai.
