"What else can a painting be besides linen stretched over a rectangle?"
Jan Maarten Voskuil (Arnhem, 1964) asks himself what else a painting can be besides linen stretched over a rectangle? And how can he achieve the representation of light and dark in a painting without resorting to figurative illusion? He finds the solution in stretching the linen over a spatial stretcher frame. He builds three-dimensional paintings with modules. He challenges the boundaries between flat and spatial forms. He blurs the boundaries between painting, sculpture, and architecture, but ultimately it remains painting, because it is still linen on stretcher frames.
