The Subtle Art of Weightlessness
Jeff Kowatch’s painting reflects his approach to the world, which is steeped in Zen philosophy. His vibrant and immobile forms, which gently brush past each other in a blurred effect that is characteristic of the artist’s work, have an almost metaphysical dimension. It is as though the artist has lost himself in this transparent and graceful world, seeking to obliterate all traces of his own handiwork, in contrast to other artists who purposefully and vigorously apply their brushstrokes to their canvases. Jeff Kowatch’s paintings are not a window onto the world, rather it provides access to an inner world, and to questions relating to the very nature of the act of painting.
